Connection Without Lowering the Bar
Students can hear ‘I care about you’ and ‘This is not good enough yet’ from the same teacher.
Connection and high expectations belong together
Relationships and high expectations are not competing philosophies. Connection should help students experience accountability without experiencing rejection.
What connection is not
Connection is not saying yes to everything, avoiding consequences, making excuses, removing productive struggle, or pretending incomplete work is complete.
What connection can make possible
When students know the belief underneath the expectation, they may be more willing to accept correction, retry difficult work, ask for help, recover from mistakes, and trust that the teacher is pushing because growth is possible.
Nicholas in Practice
Some of the students Nicholas has cared about most are also students he has pushed hardest. Keep the bar. Make sure there is a human being standing beside the student while they try to reach it.
Reflection
- Where might I be lowering an expectation because conflict feels easier to avoid?
- Where might a student hear correction but not yet feel the belief underneath it?
- What support would help this student reach the expectation without removing the expectation?
