Episode Summary
In this episode, I reflect on a season following COVID when educators returned expecting to continue exploring language arts curriculum options, only to discover that major decisions had already been made during the summer. New resources had arrived, old materials were gone, and expectations had shifted dramatically. While change itself was not necessarily the problem, the pace, timing, and limited teacher voice made the transition especially difficult.
I explore why change fatigue has become a real challenge in education. Teachers regularly adapt to new programs, leadership, policies, technologies, and expectations while continuing to meet students’ needs every day. During times of significant change, trust, communication, transparency, and meaningful opportunities for collaboration become essential to helping educators navigate uncertainty.
This episode also examines the importance of staying grounded when systems continue to evolve. Strong relationships, consistent routines, reflective practices, collaborative teams, and a clear sense of purpose provide stability when everything else feels unsettled. While educational systems may continue shifting, these anchors help educators remain focused on serving students well.
Ultimately, meaningful leadership recognizes that change is experienced not only professionally but personally. Policies, curriculum decisions, and leadership choices ripple throughout entire school communities. By balancing thoughtful implementation with trust, realistic expectations, and support, schools can help educators adapt while protecting the relationships and values that remain at the heart of great teaching.
