Be the Steady Adult
Steady does not mean emotionless. It means anchored enough to choose your next move.
Steady does not mean emotionless
Teachers will not control every moment in a classroom. They can practice controlling the space between what happens and how they respond.
Steady can look like
- lowering your voice instead of matching intensity;
- giving yourself one beat before responding;
- using predictable language;
- separating the student from the behavior;
- holding the expectation without turning the moment into a power contest;
- involving another adult when the situation is bigger than one person can safely handle;
- returning later for repair when everyone is calmer.
Nicholas in Practice
Being steady is not about never feeling frustrated. It is about being anchored enough to choose the next move instead of letting the moment choose it for you.
Quick reset
- What is happening right now?
- What response will make this better rather than bigger?
- What expectation still needs to stay clear?
- Does this need another adult?
- What repair or follow-up is needed later?
