Teacher Well-Being & Retention
Do I Need to Leave Teaching—or Does Something Need to Change?
A reflection tool for separating the work of teaching from the conditions around it—and deciding what may actually need to change.
What are you actually trying to leave?
There are teachers who no longer want to teach. There are also teachers who still love teaching but are exhausted by the conditions around it. Start by separating the work of teaching from the environment around the work.
What still gives you energy?
Look specifically at the actual work of teaching. What still feels meaningful?
What is draining you?
Consider workload, unsupported behavior, leadership, trust, initiatives, family conflict, schedule, commute, pay, emotional load, planning, micromanagement, autonomy, role, building, district, or the profession itself.
Temporary or structural?
Is this a hard season, or is this the normal system? Patterns matter. Ask what would have to change for the work to become sustainable again.
Nicholas in Practice
After more than two decades in one district, Nicholas changed systems and continued teaching. Sometimes the profession is not the thing a teacher needs to leave. Sometimes it is a particular set of conditions.
Staying is not always the right answer
No guilt disguised as encouragement. The right next step may be another school, district, role, or profession. The purpose is clarity, not manufacturing a stay decision.
Decision reflection
Page 1: parts of teaching that still matter; major drains; environment problems; profession problems; what I have tried; temporary, repeating, structural, or not sure.
Page 2: what sustainability would look like; what is within my control; what requires others; whether another environment may help; possible options; my next step, not my entire life plan.
