Planning a Coherent Unit

Ten good lessons do not automatically make one good unit

A coherent unit connects standards, goals, instruction, assessment, differentiation, engagement, and sequencing so each lesson helps move students toward a larger learning purpose.

Start with the learning foundation

Clarify what standards matter, what students should understand or be able to do, what prior knowledge matters, and why the unit is worth teaching.

Plan the arc, not just the days

Ask what students need first, what can come later, where practice belongs, when misconceptions are likely, and when students should apply learning with greater independence.

Align assessment to the actual goals

Before designing activities, decide what evidence would show that students learned the intended concepts and skills.

Make differentiation part of the plan

Consider scaffolds, supports, extensions, varied representations, grouping, and opportunities for challenge while the unit is being built.

Engagement should serve the learning

Creative does not automatically mean coherent. Use engagement strategies because they help students think, practice, communicate, create, or apply—not merely because they are fun.
