Good mentoring helps a teacher learn how to think

Beginning teachers need practical help, reassurance, honest feedback, and access to the accumulated wisdom of experienced educators. But mentoring should not create dependence. The goal is stronger judgment, confidence, reflection, and professional growth.

Start with what actually happened

Avoid jumping directly to advice.

What happened?
What were you trying to accomplish?
What did students do?
What surprised you?
What evidence do you have?

Ask before telling

What options do you see?
What are you leaning toward?
What might happen if you try that?
What are you unsure about?

Share experience without turning it into law

Use language such as One thing I have tried…, What I have noticed over time…, and Here is one possibility…. Veteran wisdom should expand a newer teacher’s options rather than communicate that there is only one acceptable teaching style.

Name what is going well

Mentoring should not become a weekly deficit report. Help new teachers identify strengths, progress, better decisions, and growing confidence.

End with a next step

A good conversation should leave the teacher with one or two clear things to try—not seventeen things to fix.

Revisit the decision

At the next conversation, ask what happened. This turns advice into a learning cycle rather than a one-time opinion.
