Student Voice & Empowerment
Starting a Student Podcast or Legacy Project
Give students a real audience, real responsibility, and a project future students can inherit.
Start with ownership, not equipment
This is not primarily a guide about buying microphones. The deeper question is whether students have something real to own, shape, and carry forward.
Choose a purpose worth speaking for
Decide what the project is for. Student voice becomes stronger when the audience and purpose are authentic rather than simulated for a grade.
Give students real roles
Students can plan topics, research, write questions, host, interview, introduce guests, reflect, promote appropriately, and improve the project over time. Adults support logistics, safety, permissions, privacy, and quality without taking the project back.
Build for a real audience
A real platform might be a podcast, presentation, community event, younger students, families, school leaders, or another audience beyond the teacher.
Make listening part of the work
Strong interviews come from listening, follow-up questions, preparation, and genuine curiosity—not simply reading a list of questions.
Think about legacy
A legacy project should be able to outgrow one group of students. Ask what future students can inherit, improve, and make their own.
Nicholas in Practice
The BAGO Mic grew from student voice, leadership, communication, and community connection. It is rooted in Winnebago Public Schools and the Winnebago community. Other educators should build from their own students and community rather than copying culturally specific elements.
Project planner
Define the purpose, audience, student ownership, adult support, roles, permissions/privacy, community connection, production workflow, reflection, and what future students may inherit.
