Build a project where students do more than help

Student leadership grows through real responsibility. A strong project gives students a purpose, an audience, decisions to make, work to own, and a chance to reflect on what their leadership changed.

Plan six pieces

Purpose — What should this project accomplish for students or others?

Audience — Who benefits, listens, learns, or responds?

Student ownership — What decisions and responsibilities genuinely belong to students?

Adult support — What must adults teach, protect, approve, or coordinate?

Community connection — Who or what outside the classroom could deepen the project?

Legacy — What can future students inherit, improve, or continue?

Leadership roles can vary

Not every student needs the microphone or title. Leadership can include research, organizing, welcoming, interviewing, explaining, planning, troubleshooting, reflecting, documenting, encouraging others, or teaching the next group.

The BAGO Mic reinforced that students grow when adults trust them with real opportunities to lead, serve, collaborate, ask questions, and represent something larger than themselves.
