Behavior is not identity

A difficult behavior is something a student did. It is not the whole student. Teachers make better decisions when they separate the behavior from the identity of the child.

Hold the boundary and keep the dignity

  • Describe what happened without labeling the student.
  • Ask what may be underneath the behavior without assuming one cause.
  • Keep the expectation clear.
  • Leave room for repair and return.
  • Remember a strength, interest, relationship, or human quality that exists beyond the behavior.

Nicholas in Practice

“He made a terrible choice” is different from “He is a terrible kid.” Accountability still matters, but the response should leave room for the student to come back from the moment.
