Teacher Well-Being & Retention
Care Without Carrying Everything
Caring deeply is part of teaching. Carrying every problem is not.
Caring is not the problem
Caring helps teachers notice, advocate, and continue thinking about students. It becomes unsustainable when concern automatically turns into personal responsibility for every outcome.
Ask what actually belongs to you
Your role may be to notice, communicate, document, teach, refer, support, advocate, and follow up. That may be enough. You do not have to become the entire counselor, case manager, family therapist, administrator, crisis team, and support system.
Asking for help is part of responsible teaching
Putting something down does not mean you stopped caring. Asking someone else for help does not mean you failed.
Nicholas in Practice
Sometimes the right professional move is: share it · refer it · document it · ask for help · set a boundary · go home. That is not caring less; it is refusing to confuse caring with carrying.
Practical Note
This is distinct from What Am I Carrying? That tool helps teachers sort the weight; this resource challenges the belief that caring requires ownership of every problem.
