Teacher Well-Being & Retention
Longevity Over Martyrdom
You do not have to prove your commitment through exhaustion.
Exhaustion is not evidence of excellence
A sustainable teacher is not less committed. Ask: Can I build a teaching life I can actually live?
Heroic teaching is not the goal
One extraordinary year followed by collapse is not the ideal. Longevity allows wisdom, relationships, judgment, mentorship, influence, and perspective to grow.
Simplifying is not lowering standards
Sustainability can look like going home, resting, saying no, simplifying, sharing responsibility, stopping before perfect, using time-saving systems, or letting a good lesson simply be good.
Nicholas in Practice
Nicholas wants to keep teaching and still have patience, creativity, curiosity, and energy for people outside school. Some choices that an exhausted teacher might label selfish are actually necessary.
Final reflection
What habit in my teaching life looks impressive from the outside but feels unsustainable from the inside?
