Check the health of the team

Strong teams can disagree, ask hard questions, share responsibility, and still leave the room trusting one another.

Rate each: Strong / Inconsistent / Needs Attention

  • Everyone has a meaningful opportunity to speak.
  • We can disagree without making disagreement personal.
  • We ask clarifying questions before assuming intent.
  • We can name a concern without immediately blaming a person.
  • We are willing to admit when our own practice may need adjustment.
  • We share useful ideas, materials, and expertise rather than protecting territory.
  • Decisions feel like shared work rather than one person’s agenda.
  • We can give and receive professional feedback without retaliation or sarcasm.
  • When we commit to something, we follow through.
  • When trust is damaged, we address it rather than pretending nothing happened.

Look for patterns, not one bad meeting

One tense conversation does not automatically mean a team is unhealthy. Look at who speaks most and least, what topics are avoided, what happens when somebody disagrees, whether people can safely say they need help, and whether commitments survive after the meeting ends.

Nicholas in Practice

Nicholas’s collaboration work distinguishes a team that merely meets from a team that can actually learn together. Productive collaboration requires enough professional trust that people can be honest, examine their own practice, share responsibility, and stay connected even when the conversation is difficult.

One-team move

Choose one team behavior to strengthen before the next check-in. Do not turn the reflection into ten new norms at once.

Final question: What would make it easier for this team to be honest, useful, and professionally safe with one another?
